Social Camp Memphis

2 Mar

Picture 8.pngIf you are interested in social media you may want to attend Social Camp Memphis. The event will be held on Saturday, March 7 at the Memphis College of Art. (Don’t miss the Friday night, March 6 mixer.)

What is SocialCamp?

SocialCamp Memphis is an un-conference focusing on Social Media and Social Networking. Just imagine a conference where the morning is comprised of designated speakers/topics, and the afternoon is comprised of focused discussions and impromptu presentations that are decided on by the attendees.

So, this conference will be similar to the popular Memphis BarCamp – but with a focus on Social Media & Networking. You may remember me from BarCamp speaking on future trends. I hope to see you at SocialCamp as well. It should be another fun event.

So, mark your calendars for Saturday March the 7th. A special thanks goes out to LaunchMemphis and LunaWeb for their support and coordination of these conferences. They are key to the growing Memphis creative class and entrepreneurial community.

Virtually Realisitic Emily Project

31 Aug

Look out, Hollywood. Here is a video from Image Metrics who created a pretty realistic avatar/ actor with the Emily Project. What will happen when you can have virtual actors and can tweak their looks and behavior as much as you want?

From the website:
“With Emily, Image Metrics has proven that reality in facial animation is not only achievable sooner, but more efficiently, than many in the entertainment industry originally thought. When we first started working on Emily, our goal was to create an exact replica of the real actress Emily O’Brien. Why? Because there was no other way to determine how close we had come to reality if we did not replicate a “real” person. Judging from the reaction of people at SIGGRAPH 2008, and the hundreds of media hits, we’ve come pretty close to the mark.”

LifeLog

7 Jan

Camera_woman2Blogging can be broken down into several sub-sets of bloggers. One sub-set of bloggers is the blogger that blogs their life. They just publish what they are doing – all the time. One short-cut in the future could be just to literally record your entire life.

In the future, some could carry around what I would call a “LifeBlog” or “LifeLog” recorder. It would be a tiny recorder that records video and sound with a large amount of digital storage.

With future advances in storage– a device that some could carry and record their entire life – will be completely possible.

The implications, of course, will cause several related discussions about personal privacy. But, other, positive things could come in the areas of medicine (what happened during a heart attack, etc.), education (record lessons), crime prevention (what happened during a robbery, etc…), and don’t forget spousal arguments about who said what.

A device the size of a sugar cube will be able to record and store high resolution video footage of every second of a human life within two decades, experts said yesterday.

Researchers said governments and societies must urgently debate the implications of the huge increases in computing power and the growing mass of information being collected on individuals.

Some fear that the advent of "human black boxes" combined with the extension of medical, financial and other digital records will lead to loss of privacy and a dramatic expansion of the nanny state.

Others highlight positive advances in medicine, education, crime prevention and the way history will be recorded.
